Buford said To Bite Off Ear Parts

An Oklahoma County sheriff’s detention officer is recovering after a jail inmate attacked him and bit off parts of his ears.

Around 6:45 p.m. on a Saturday last month, inmate Benjamin Buford, 22, assaulted the detention officer while the officer was removing food trays from inmate cells, according to the sheriff’s office.the inmate punched and kicked the detention officer several times, and bit off portions of the officer’s left and right ears, according to it was said.

Mr. Buford also attempted to gouge out one of the officer’s eyes, the sheriff’s office said.

He faces one charge of aggravated assault and battery on a police officer and one charge of maiming by disfigurement.

Originally, Mr. Buford was booked into the jail by Oklahoma City police in August on a sexual battery charge, according to the sheriff’s office.

The detention officer, a five-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was taken to a hospital for treatment for injuries and is recovering at home.

Sheriff P.D. Taylor visited with the officer over the weekend of the attack and said he is in good spirits considering the severity of his injuries.
